Sophie Calle
Artiste plasticienne, photographe, femme de lettres et réalisatrice française
Sophie Calle has been the subject of numerous exhibitions around the world since the late 1970s. Alternately described as a conceptual artist, photographer, video artist, and even a detective, she has developed an immediately recognizable practice, combining text and photography to
create a unique form of narrative. Her work forms a vast system of echoes and internal references, interconnected like chapters in a larger body of work in which she often blurs the boundaries between the intimate and the public, reality and fiction, art and life. Her practice meticulously orchestrates an underlying reality—her own or that of others—while leaving room for chance.
Most recently, Sophie Calle took over the Picasso Museum with the exhibition À toi de faire ma mignonne, celebrating in her own way the 50th anniversary of the painter’s death. In 2024, she was awarded the Praemium Imperiale in the painting category in Japan.
