This sixth edition tackles a recurring theme in brut art, that of the face. The exploration of the Lausanne museum’s collection has resulted in a selection of over 330 pieces, confirming the richness and diversity of contexts, media, techniques, and graphic forms from which these representations emerge.

The exhibition is divided into 6 sections, each testifying to a different modality, function, or approach to the creative process: Textile Faces, Three-dimensional Faces, Faces in Transit, Portrait Faces, Graphic Variations of the Face, and Emergences of the Face.

Madge Gill

The works of Madge Gill, a mediumistic artist from the mid-20th century, were collected by Jean Dubuffet. Guided by a spirit and in a trance state, Madge Gill drew in ink on surfaces ranging from small formats to rolls of over a hundred meters. Her entire body of work was only discovered after she died in 1961.
