women in art brut art paris-art fair 2025
curator: annette messager
The gallery is pleased to announce that Annette Messager will curate our booth (D16) showcasing a selection of works by women artists, both classic and contemporary, at the Art Paris fair at the Grand Palais from April 3 to 6, 2025.
For a long time, women artists, like Art Brut artists, have been overlooked. Were female Art Brut artists doubly marginalized?
It is true that, historically, any behavior deemed vaguely deviant from women was judged more harshly by patriarchal societies, while the phallocentric systems in which they lived could themselves be inherently harmful.
For some of these women, however, confinement, social exclusion, or a voluntary break from societal norms unlocked exceptional creativity within them. “Women in art brut” is, above all, a tribute to these remarkable women—whether their difference was suppressed or whether it led them proudly to the walls of museums.
This is why it felt natural for us to entrust the presentation of these twelve artists to Annette Messager, who has continually explored the question of femininity through her work and whose deep interest in Art Brut has never wavered.
Christian Berst will host a roundtable discussion titled “Art Brut by Women” on Friday, April 4, from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM, alongside Annette Messager and Philippe Dagen.
Join us for this conversation in the conference area, at stand B0.
